Top 10 Housewares & Appliances Predictions for 2007

What can we expect in housewares and appliances for 2007? Some things are definitely predictable given current trends, consumer choices and market activity. Here's my top predictions of what we'll see in appliances and housewares in the new year.

1. Clamshell or Shrink Wrap Packaging Use

Use of clamshell or shrink-wrap packaging for higher priced gadgets and kitchen tools will increase in an effort to reduce the risk of theft and loss of revenue for retailers. The strength of the clamshell will increase making them even harder to open. We know how difficult these are to open so arm yourself with a good opener ? you?ll need it.More »

2. Reusable Plastic Storage Containers

Reusable plastic storage containers have become very popular and I can see an increase in brands, variety and sizes in the coming year. As competition and supply increases ? prices should lower to meet consumer demand. These economical containers are not designed to last indefinitely but with care, can be recycled a few times to provide convenient storage solutions especially for guest take-home meals. I welcome an influx of new innovative designs to accommodate various storage needs.More »

3. Appliances & Energy Saving Features

Manufacturers will increase their Energy Star product lines and there will also be an increase in energy efficiency features on both large and small appliances. You?ll see more programmable options, especially ?delay start? features, which help consumers reduce their energy costs since they can delay appliance operation to the time of day when electricity rates are lower.

4. Cleaner Lines & Built-in Appliance Designs

In 2007, you?ll see an increase in cleaner streamlined designs of large appliances due to the consumer demand for appliances that are uncluttered and are quicker and easier to clean. More built-in, drop-in and cabinet -enclosed models will be available as consumer demand increases for hidden appliances and models that easily blend into new kitchen designs.More »

5. Time-Saving Features & Multi Function Designs

I welcome the increase we?ll see in appliance time-saving settings which will become standard product features instead of options. There'll be more small electrics that can accomplish the task in less time, and an increase in multi-function counter appliances. The market will demand more easy to operate and low maintenance features. These will reduce the overall time we spend in the kitchen and help us better manage our hectic schedules.More »

6. Vacuum & Floor Care Trends

With the need to stock up on vacuum cleaner bags eliminated, I can see the popularity of bagless vacuums increasing over the traditional bagged models. Manufacturers will concentrate more efforts on improving design and operation of bagless vacuums to compete with the increasing demand.
Robotic vacuums and floor cleaners will also increase in popularity as will available brands. Having a robot do the task while you do something more pleasurable will be the drawing factor for these products.
We'll also see the carpet sweeper of the 1970's make a comeback as a quick-pass carpet care solution.More »

7. Cookware Trends

The word ?anodized? will become a household word and will enjoy increased popularity over the economical ?nonstick? variety of cookware, as consumer preferences will shift to the higher priced, but more durable hard anodized cookware finish that provides good food release and easy clean-up. Cast-iron cookware will continue to increase in popularity, especially as the cookware of choice for outdoor cooking, as consumers plan more family outdoor cooking events in the new year.More »

8. Silicone Kitchen Tools & Bakeware

The demand for silicone kitchen tools such as spatulas, tongs and whisks will surge as consumers will choose these over traditional kitchen tools because of their durability and convenience features. Silicone bakeware however, will enjoy only a moderate increase in popularity. Although silicone pans can produce some excellent baking results, the flexible pan designs and the guesswork to adjust batter capacity to fit smaller pan sizes, will negatively affect market growth. Read Silicone Bakeware Basics for more information on baking with silicone products.More »

9. Baby Boomers & Quality Products

As Baby Boomers prepare for retirement, there will be an increase in demand for compact appliances that not only require less counter space, but that are appropriately sized for one or two person meals. Product quality will be high on the baby boomer?s list. Demand will increase for products that are quality constructed, easy to maintain and that promise durability for the retirement years. Manufacturers will meet this demand with innovative designs and more smaller-sized appliances.More »

10. Large Appliances & Extended Warranties

As the demand for newer high-tech appliances with electronic features has increased so will future repair bills. The handyman may no longer be able to repair these and you will require skilled repair technicians. Costs of these appliances have increased and since warranty periods have not, I can see the demand for large appliance extended warranties increasing in the coming year, as consumers take measures to protect their appliance investments.More »
