How to Tuft Upholstery

    • 1). Find a piece of furniture you want to tuft. For this project, you will need to be able to pull a needle through the back of the furniture, so you should use pieces that you can sew through. An ottoman with a removable top or a fabric headboard are good examples. The tufting also works on pillows.

    • 2). Thread a needle with a piece of thread that matches the fabric of the furniture you're working with. Make the thread about 12 inches long, and tie a knot at the end so it will catch in the fabric when you begin sewing.

    • 3). Hold a decorative button on top of the furniture where you want to create the tuft. Decorative buttons can be found at fabric stores, craft stores or hobby stores.

    • 4). Pierce the fabric of the furniture on the underside of where the button is. Push it through until the head of the needle finds the button. Then maneuver the needle through one of the small holes at the button's center.

    • 5). Pull the needle all the way through the hole it has pierced. Then point the needle back downward. Snake the needle through the hole opposite the first hole, pushing it through until the head of the needle comes out to the other side, where it started. Pull the thread taut, until an indent or tuft is made at the spot where the button rests.

    • 6). Repeat Steps 4-5 six more times, so the button is securely in place. Tie a knot in the thread once it's come out the back side the last time, and trim away the excess thread.
