- 1). Use the NADA Guides or Kelley Blue Book websites (see Resources) to check the fair market value of your vehicle. This is the amount you can claim on your taxes, so be sure to use your home ZIP code for the most accurate quote of fair market value. If the value is over $5,000, you must get a written appraisal from a professional appraiser in Hawaii.
- 2). Locate charities in Hawaii using the Charity Vault website (see Resources). Some charities in Hawaii that accept vehicle donations include the Hawaiian Humane Society and the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. You also can donate to 9th Life Hawaii through donationonline.com.
- 3). Contact the charity to which you want to donate your vehicle to make sure they are currently accepting car donations. If you have a vehicle that is not running, be sure to let them know as not all charities in Hawaii accept non-running or junk cars for donation. You also need to make sure the charity is on the same island as you or you may not be able to make the donation.
- 4). Make an appointment for your car to be picked up or for you to drop the car off with the charity. Some charities, such as 9th Life Hawaii, will come and tow away the vehicle, while other charities, such as the Hawaiian Humane Society, require that you drive the vehicle to them.
- 5). Donate the vehicle and present your signed vehicle title to the charity. This transfers ownership of the vehicle to the charity. Get your donation receipt before you leave the charity because you will need it to claim the donation on your taxes.
