- 1). Wipe the columns with a damp cloth and let them air dry. Sand down any chipped paint or rough areas with 220-grit sandpaper and wipe the dust off with a tack cloth.
- 2). Paint the columns with an exterior paint that includes a primer. Select a color that matches your shutters or trim, or use white for a crisp look. Let the paint air dry. If you do not want to paint, install column wraps which will cover the old columns.
- 3). Wrap the columns in single strings of holiday lights, or hang a bow on each column. Use white lights or bows in neutral colors so they can be used year-round.
- 4). Place plant pots with vining plants at the bottom of each column. Place adhesive-backed garden hooks up the backs of the columns, every 6 inches. As the plants grow, train the vines around the columns by looping them through the hooks.
