Already enamored with the Grantham’s and Crawley’s lives in England, we continued to be intrigued by their lavish journey to Scotland for a family holiday.
While the addictive television show is normally filmed at Highclere Castle in England, for the season three finale, Scotland’s Inveraray Castle took center stage and introduced us to the lush and pastoral west coast of Scotland and its popular sporting activities, including deer stalking and pheasant hunting.
Located 60 miles northwest of Glasgow in Argyll, Inveraray played the fictional home of Lord Grantham’s cousin Shrimpy, but it is actually the real-life home of the Duke of Argyll and the seat of the Clan Campbell.
While it’s not possible to spend the night, visitors are allowed to explore the castle’s historical rooms, stay for tea, and walk the grounds and gardens. Along with deer stalking, Argyle offers a variety of sporting activities including trout fishing, horseback riding, hiking, and exploring a variety of historic sites.
It's also possible to immerse yourself in the lifestyle of royalty by renting a historic castle. Celtic Castles, a company that specializes in providing vacation experiences in historic castle hotels and residences, offers a variety of castle properties and castle hotels near Inveraray and throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France.
