How to Increase the Value of a Car

    • 1). Keep all service records. Service records provide credibility and show the car has been regularly maintained and is in working condition. You can also use Carfax or a similar service to obtain a car history report.

    • 2). Clean the car. If a car looks neat and taken care of, potential buyers will assume the car is more valuable. Wash and wax the exterior of the car. Remove all clutter and trash from the inside and trunk of the car, then vacuum the seats, clean the windows, and wipe down the wheel and dashboard with a surface cleaner. Place the manual and any other important documentation in the car's glove department.

    • 3). Maintain the vehicle. Make sure to get brake fluid and oil checked regularly by a mechanic, and get the car inspected yearly for any problems the car may have. Keep records of inspections. Park the vehicle in a closed garage to keep the paint looking fresh and to reduce the presence of rust.

    • 4). Use brand name parts in the car. Quality, brand name parts last longer and usually come with a warranty. Prospective buyers will also be more likely to recognize the names of brand name parts and this added credibility increases the value of the car.
