Do It Yourself Construction of a Wall Mural

    • 1). Prepare the wall on which the mural will be painted. Ideally, the wall should be free of windows and doors if you are painting a large mural. Remove any printed wallpaper or paint your wall a neutral color to give yourself a blank "canvas" to work with.

    • 2). Place the projector in front of your blank wall and place your image on the top. Flip on the power and lower the lights in the room. You can make the image larger by backing up the machine and smaller by pushing it towards the wall. Determine a satisfying place for your image and use your pencil to lightly trace the projected image onto the wall. Do this with the entire picture. When completed, turn the lights back on and inspect what you have done. Fix any mistakes and sharpen any incomplete lines.

    • 3). Study your image and determine what colors you will need to paint your mural. It is wise to paint the background first and complete all shading before moving on to the main subject of the image. Shading can be accomplished by using a darker version of your chosen color and shading the appropriate areas. Remember that your version of the image does not have to be exact or perfect. Do this with the whole mural. This step can become quite time consuming.

    • 4). Highlight and shade your mural after it is painted with all of the basic colors. Highlight by using a lighter version of your paint color or shade with a darker version or black. Highlighting and shading give the image a more dimensional and realistic look. Step away from your mural often to critique your work.

    • 5). Give your finished mural plenty of time to dry and then apply a matte finish sealer. This will help with fading and prevent the rubbing off of paint while cleaning.
