- 1). Wash your horse's tail at least once a week. Though your horse's tail will be put up, you want to take it down occasionally and keep it clean so the horse doesn't start rubbing it.
- 2). Clean the tail by filling a bucket with water and some shampoo and holding it up so you can put the tail in it. Scrub the tail with one hand while you hold the bucket with the other, then rinse the tail.
- 3). Apply a conditioner or mane and tail detangler to the tail when it's clean. Rinse out the conditioner or detangler unless it's leave-in (most detanglers are leave-in).
- 4). Comb the tail, starting at the ends of the hair, with a wide-toothed comb. Hairbrushes can break off the hair when it's wet.
- 1). Separate the tail into sections approximately an inch or two wide.
- 2). Loop each section about halfway down the tail and twist the loop two times.
- 3). Pull the end of the tail hairs through the loop. The section should end up looking similar to a figure-eight in shape.
- 4). Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for every section of hair.
