Mistake #1 Mowing Height.
Many make the mistake of cutting their lawn shorter than they should. This is not healthy or beneficial in any way. Short-cut lawns expose surface roots to the hot sun, which can dry out and die in no time at all. Not only that, weed and insect are more likely to attack because the grass is stressed and weak from being over cut.
Here is what to do instead. As a general guideline never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Depending on your lawn type, more or less can be cut-off. But play it safe and do not cut any more than the top one-third of the grass blade.
Mistake #2 Dull Blades
Mistake number two is often over looked yet it can have a major impact on the appearance and health of your lawn. Correct this problem and your mowing gets easier while saving you time and effort. Have I got your attention? Good. What were talking about here is your mower blade being dull as a butter knife.
A dull mower blade tears, rips and hacks the grass blade off instead of neatly and evenly cutting it. The result is a lawn that takes on a faint white sheen, heals slowly, and invites pests and disease. You don't want that do you? Of course not.
Here's the solution.
Regularly have your blades sharpened by a professional. Or, if you have your own tools, sharpen the blades yourself. When is the best time to do this? After mowing kneel down and break-off a few blades of grass and give it a good looking over. It should have a evenly cut surface across the width of the blade. If it has peaks and valleys like a mountain its time to give it a sharpening.
Mistake # 3 Mowing a wet Lawn
A common mistake homeowners make is mowing their lawn when its wet. For starters it's messy, chokes out your mower and takes twice as long to finish mowing. But here is where the real problem lies.
Cutting a lawn that is wet creates gobs of grass, which clump together and develops fungus. Left unchecked, the fungus spreads to other parts of your lawn. What happens next is the lawn becomes sickly requiring treatment to save it from an early grave. If you must cut your lawn while its wet make sure you remove all the clippings before calling it quits for the day.
