- 1). Select a planting site for paper shell almonds in full sun within U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 5 through 8, meaning the lowest temperature of the year should be between minus 20 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The best soil for almonds is moderately fertile with good drainage.
- 2). Plant paper shell almond trees in late January or early February. This gives the root system time to grow before the tree begins to grow leaves. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots without bending them, usually 2 feet in diameter.
- 3). Remove the paper shell almond tree from its nursery container and spray the roots with a fungicide, such as Galltrol. Place the tree in the hole at the same depth as it was in the container. Pack the soil around the roots as you fill in the hole. Soak the soil with water to remove air pockets around the roots.
- 4). Water the paper shell almond tree with 1 to 2 inches of water per week to keep the soil moist during the first growing season. These trees generally do not require supplemental water after the first year except during periods of prolonged drought.
- 5). Apply 1/4 lb. of high-nitrogen fertilizer to the paper shell almond tree when the shoots are at least 4 inches long, ensuring the fertilizer is at least 1.5 feet from the trunk of the tree. Perform this application of fertilizer at least three times during the growing season.
