Do-It-Yourself Outdoor Tabletop Water Fountains

    • 1). Seal the inside and outside of a 10-inch or larger terracotta pot with terracotta sealer. Allow the sealer to dry. Use a different-size planter if you want to make a larger or smaller tabletop fountain.

    • 2). Trim a small plastic coffee can lid to cover the inside bottom of the planter. If you don't have a plastic coffee can lid, metal flashing, a rubber sheet or thick pond liner will work as well.

    • 3). Cut a slit from the outside edge to the center of the plastic lid to accommodate the power cord of a small submersible fountain pump. Fit the lid over the cord near the base of the pump.

    • 4). Spread silicone sealant on the inside bottom of the planter. Fit the end of the power cord through the drainage hole and press the plastic into the silicone. Slide the cord through the drainage hole until the pump sits flush on top of the center of the plastic.

    • 5). Seal the slit in the plastic around the cord, and seal the perimeter of the plastic lid inside the planter with silicone. Wait 24 hours.

    • 6). Cut three to five bricks of wet floral foam to fit inside the planter between the pump and the sides, using a serrated knife. The foam should almost reach the planter's rim. Wet the foam and insert it inside the planter.

    • 7). Attach a fountainhead extension to the pump spout. Insert three to five stalks of lucky bamboo into the wet floral foam. Fill the planter with water.

    • 8). Cover the top of the planter with craft moss. Start the pump. The water will spray from the fountainhead back into the planter. Adjust the fountainhead as necessary if the spray falls outside the planter.
