Mad Men – you'd be mad not to watch it

Every so often, a new television series comes along that sweeps you off your feet like your first love; it becomes the object of your attention and you want to tell the world about it. Mad Men is one of those series'.Sadly, Mad Men is soon coming to an end, and if you haven't already had the pleasure of viewing this 7-season masterpiece, I'm here to tell you why you should.

Mad Men is a period drama series about an advertising agency, set in the 1960's.  The show documents the highs and lows of working in the cut-throat advertising industry, as well as the struggles of establishing yourself as a successful copywriter in a highly competitive environment. The political and social landscape of the era is well documented too - sexism, racism, discrimination and inequality, among others. This naturally creates scope for a wide range of interesting plots which are executed with finesse.

The culture of the advertising industry in America during the 1960s is depicted in Mad Men as glamorous, hedonistic and barbaric – all which make for extremely compulsive viewing. However, above all else, it is the drama and the individual performances of its key characters that will really win you over. Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm, marvels at playing a womanising alcoholic who at his core is somewhat lost and yearning for something more that he can't always find at the bottom of a bottle. Peggy Olson, played by Elisabeth Moss, is an outstandingly intriguing character; a voice for women with a determination to make their mark in a workplace dominated by men.The series appeals to a wide span of people, particularly those interested in advertising. It may not focus too much on the academics such as copywriting courses and other routes into the field. However, it does present a brutal portrayal of how difficult it can be to achieve success, and that still rings true today.

A television series like Mad Men can change your life. As much as that may sound like a cliché from a ludicrous self-help book, Mad Men might inspire you to have a rethink about your career and take a copywriting course.  If you're already worrying about finding the time to become the next Don Draper, then you have plenty of options. Why not consider a distance learning copywriting course, for example? Why should I watch Mad Men, I hear you ask? Because it is deeply moving and wonderfully written. Don't take my word for it – find out for yourself and be seduced by this majestic show that will be sorely missed.
