- 1). Feed the red claw plant with 13-5-13 ratio fertilizer three weeks before dividing it for propagation. Apply the fertilizer according to the label. Water the red claw plant to a 3-inch depth using a garden hose immediately after feeding it.
- 2). Look for a small offshoot near the base of the red claw plant. Find one with two or three leaves and a height of no more than 1 foot. Avoid offshoots with yellow leaves or drooping stems.
- 3). Insert a garden trowel into the soil near the base of the parent red claw plant. Work the trowel back and forth to sever the rhizome.
- 4). Dig around the offshoot approximately 4 inches from the base. Work the trowel under the offshoot at an angle and pry it up.
- 5). Slide the trowel under the red claw offshoot toward the parent plant. Support the roots of the offshoot with one hand while uncovering the rhizome.
- 6). Lift the red claw offshoot from the hole. Set it aside in a cool, shady spot while preparing its new planting site.
- 7). Dig a planting hole in a bed with similar growing conditions to that of the parent red claw plant. Make the hole four times the depth of the offshoot's root ball.
- 8). Fill the bottom two-thirds of the planting hole with loosened soil. Lay the roots and rhizome of the offshoot in the hole then fill in around it with the displaced soil.
- 9). Water the red claw offshoot to a depth of 4 inches immediately after planting. Keep the soil moist at all times with 2 inches of water per week for the first month after planting it. Decrease water to 1 inch every 10 days after that.

Feed the red claw offshoot with 13-5-13 fertilizer two months after planting it. Water it thoroughly after feeding it to distribute the nutrients among the roots. Watch for renewed growth in two to three months.
