How to Make a Fleece Snuggle Bag

How to Make a Fleece Snuggle Bag

This snuggle bag is perfect for sitting around, or lying around, watching tv. It would also be a good sleeping bag to use for warmer weather. You can make a snuggle bag big enough for an adult, small enough to fit a child, or even one for a doll or a lucky puppy!
First, start out by gathering these supplies:
  • Tape Measure
  • Fleece
  • Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine

The first thing you need to do is take a few measurements...

Figure Out How Much Fleece You Need

Did you notice how I did not write how much fleece in the materials list? That is because the amount of fleece you need will depend on the size of the person you are making the bag for. To determine how much fleece you need, measure how tall the person is, from the top of their head to their heel, and then add 6-inches. Now multiply that number by 2. By measuring from the top of the head and adding 6 inches, this should ensure plenty of wiggle room. To figure out how wide your snuggle bag should be, you can measure loosely around the person at their widest point. Multiply that number by 2.
You should now know what size of fleece you need. When buying fleece, keep in mind that the fleece is usually 60-inches wide on the bolt.

Once you have your measurements, you can cut your fleece...

Cutting Your Fleece

Fold your piece of fleece in half lengthwise, make sure the right sides are together. If you can't tell which side is the right or wrong side, don't worry about it. This is very common when working with fleece. Your folded piece should now be as longer as the number you got when you measured the height of the person. You can now use scissors (or a rotary cutter and mat) to cut any of the edges to even them up. At this time, you can also cut the sides to the desired width (the measurement around the person times 2).
Now you are ready to pin your fleece together...

Pinning Your Fleece

Use straight pins to hold the 2 long edges of the folded fleece together. Pin every couple of inches.
You should now be ready to sew your fleece...

Using a straight stitch on your machine, stitch along the two longer sides leaving about a half inch seam allowance. Fold down the top, unsewn edge about a half inch, and then fold it down about an inch to make a rolled hem. Pin to secure, then stitch along the edge of the fold that is farthest from the top edge of the bag.

You can now turn your snuggle bag right side out and you are done. Make sure you take some time to add some personal touches. Add some rick-rack along the top stitch line or cut fun shapes out of contrasting fleece and sew on your bag. You can also embellish with buttons, ribbon, fabric paint, and more.
