The problem with rats that have been around for centuries is that not only do they carry certain diseases but are also able to spread them.
If you have any living in your home then getting rid of them can prove very challenging indeed.
However there are numerous types of rat killer you can use today so finding one that works won't prove difficult.
What is important however is that you need to make sure that you follow the correct steps in order to improve your chances of getting rid of these creatures once and for all? Below we take a look at the steps that you must take before and after you have purchased a rat killer.
Step 1 - The first thing that needs to be done is remove items that are actually attracting the rats to your home.
So if any trash is left outside clean this up and also make sure that your rubbish bin lids are closed properly.
Another thing to do is make sure that you put any organic material or food away that would also attract rats to your home.
Step 2 - The next thing that needs to be done is to seal your home.
It doesn't matter what sort of rat killer technique you choose to use to rid yourself of these creatures it will prove absolutely useless if more rats are able to have access to your home.
So carry out a thorough inspection of your home from top to bottom.
What you should be looking for are any cracks or holes both in the sides of your home and crawl spaces beneath where they can enter.
Plus remember to check the eaves of your home.
If you do discover any holes or cracks then cover with a steel mesh.
Step 3 - Once you have got rid of things that were attracting rats to your home and you have prevented them entry to it you are now in a position to choose the method for ridding yourself of them.
There are two common forms of rat killer people will use today.
They either choose to lay poison or they place down traps.
Poison is effective but as a rat killer is somewhat limited in its use and certainly should be considered if you have children or pets.
As for traps these are effective but you then need to dispose of the rat's body and sometimes they are able to escape before the trap is sprung.
