How to Check a Tax ID

If You Are an Employee of the Company

    • 1). Check your payroll stub. The EIN is a 9 digit number and may appear on your stub in the format xx-xxxxxxx or, if the company is a sole proprietorship, xxx-xx-xxx.

    • 2). Check the W-2 your company sent to you so that you could complete your taxes. The EIN will be on the W-2. It could appear as xxxxxxxxx, xx-xxxxxxx or xxx-xx-xxxx.

    • 3). Ask someone in the business office at your company for the company's tax ID.

If You Are Not an Employee of the Company

    • 1). Call the company and ask to speak to someone in the business office. Ask for the tax ID number.

    • 2). Check the company's website. Some publicly held companies will list the information there.

    • 3). Obtain a copy of the company's annual report if it is a public company. The tax ID will be in the annual report. Or check the EDGAR database (see Resource 4). You will need the legal name of the company.

    • 4). Search the GuideStar site if the company is a nonprofit organization. (See Resource 2)

    • 5). Try the free site, FreeERISA (see Resource 3), to check on the tax ID. You will need the company's legal name.

    • 6). Use one of the for-a-fee sites. You will need the full company name and business address. (See Resources 1 and 5)
