The advancement of Hypnosis to a valuable form of therapy

Hypnosis is really an interesting subject. Hypnosis has been used for a very long time, but it seems that we are just starting to understand it's power. What follows is a quick snapshot of hypnosis down the years, and you might be a little surprised with a few of its applications.

Hypnosis as a term was introduced by James Braid in 1841, prior to which it had been called Mesmerism. Braid decided to change the name for good reason as he now had a fuller understanding of hypnosis. The old practitioners of Mesmerism thought that it was because of some magical power or knowledge they practised, which induced the state of mesmerism. But, Dr Braid soon realised that it was not due to any special power the Mesmerist had developed, but rather the internal mental process of the subject that caused the hypnotic trance.

In the 1900's professor Emile Coue became one of the earliest people in the use of hypnosis through auto-suggestion. Dr Braid had discovered years before that hypnosis is created by the person themselves, and this application for people to give themselves hypnotic suggestions just reinforced his methodology. The approach he took was heavily influenced by Braids work before him. The concept of hypnosis being a self controlled frame of mind, instead of one dependent on power of the hypnotist was now becoming popular. The difference this made was people could now start to use this power to start making changes on a subconscious level.

In the latter part of the 19th century, Dr Sigmond Freud dabbled with hypnosis to see if it could improve psychoanalysis work, many were shocked when he declared that he felt it had little value. Many people have said that, after his books went to print reported that he definitely wouldn't have stopped experimenting with hypnosis, if he had the potential of it earlier in his career.

Doctor Milton Erickson in the mid 1900's began working with a sort of hypnotherapy which became known as indirect hypnosis, which has influenced many therapists today. This permissive kind of hypnosis was very different to previous types of hypnosis; it was used mostly for hypnotising clients of a very analytical nature.

A major contributor to hypnosis around the same time was Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, whose method was much more authoritative compared to Psychologist Milton Erickson. Dave Elman is well known for his rapid and no-nonsense methods?, which laid the foundation of many modern approaches today. Mr Elman was most famous for educating dentists and doctors in the use of hypnotic anaesthesia, many of his teachings are currently taught to this day to help with pain-free childbirth and hypno-analysis.

Ormond McGill died in 2005, a hypnotist who had a profound influence on many hypnotists. Known as 'The Dean of American Hypnosis', he published many books about stage hypnosis. He wrote many books on stage hypnosis work, but he was also innovative as a hypnotic-analyist as well.

Gil Boyne 2014-2010, author of Transforming Therapy, which builds on previous findings made by Dr Erickson and Elman, and has greatly influenced analytical therapy all around the world. Compared by many to Milton Erickson and Dave Elman, Gil developed the regression therapy many use today. Many users of his system would contend that Gil was a great leader in the field of analytical hypnosis techniques.

At their fingertips, modern therapists have more access to information than ever before. Information gathering across the internet is producing amazing results in areas such as migraines and diabetes as well as many other hard to treat conditions. More traditional applications, for example smoking, weight loss and alcohol have also become more successful. Analytical therapy is truly in an exciting time now, as it's becoming more popular worldwide.
