Ideas for Basement or Cellar Doors

    Speakeasy

    • During the days of prohibition, basements and cellars would hide more than just emergency food. Install a speakeasy in your door to add a touch of the era into your home. They come in many colors and styles, from traditional black bars to elaborately-carved silver ones. This idea would work especially well if your basement is the party place of your house or you keep your wine in the cellar.

    Safety Shelter

    • If you are a history or nature buff, decorate your basement door to reflect that. For example, hang an old framed poster on the door detailing what to do during a bomb raid or a scientific print that explains the inner workings of a tornado. Other ideas include hanging a bunch of old fashioned keys on a decorative hook or hanging a colorful construction hardhat.

    Food

    • When you use your basement or cellar for extra food storage, dress up the door to showcase that. For example, decoupage vintage advertisements over the entire door in a collage pattern. Other ideas include decoupaged handwritten recipes or copies of old family dinner photographs. For a more modern feel, hang up a still life of a fruit bowl on the door or a contemporary abstract of people eating.

    Alternative Doors

    • If you use your basement or cellar frequently, getting rid of the conventional door completely gives you an opportunity to do something different. For example, hang up custom bead curtains in its place. Get ones that go with your theme, whether they are small plastic wine bottles or fruit-shaped beads. Other ideas include hanging up a fabric curtain on a tension rod or installing a pocket door for more space.

    Exterior Entrance

    • Adding exterior entrance doors to your basement or cellar adds extra value and convenience to your home and is possible even if you do not have a walkout basement. Choose something besides just standard doors that lead under your home for extra personality. For example, select doors that are in the same color as your accent trim or a whole new contrasting color. Other ideas include painting a mural on the doors for an extra punch of color and visual interest.
