- Choose a more sophisticated color palette. Look through architectural and interior decorating magazines for images of modern homes or "cribs" owned by young people who have worked hard at a young age. Locate bedrooms that use a color palette that suits the way your young woman feels. Remove all of her childhood furniture and leftover toys. Paint the room the sophisticated new colors.
- Build a wall of bookshelves and a desk. Most young women have books from college and new art objects from trips and experiences. Decorate the bookcase in a more updated way with wrapped books, art-box storage bins and cool pieces of art. Take favorite photos, and enlarge them into large black-and-white prints to frame as art in the room, which will remind her of people and places she cares about. Select an updated headboard and larger bed with new adult bedding.
- Likely she will want to sit, read and watch her favorite films from a comfortable seating group, large chair or other relaxing place. Place the television so that it can be hidden when not in use. Reconfigure the closet to maximize storage by installing a closet organizer. Hang operational curtains in the same color palette as the bedding. Use a rug with all of her new colors, and position the rug to hide an older rug or flooring. Create additional pull-out storage under the bed that is easy to access.
- Add accessories to make the room feel complete and comfortable. Include lamps that provide good light, nightstands that can double as storage, an occasional table to sit near the chair and decorative items to bring the whole room together. A more adult room should feel well dressed and complete so that your young woman can relax and feel safe in her room. As a finishing touch, install a new locking doorknob for that added sense of security and privacy.
