Most people consider champagne as something more than an ordinary beverage. It is considered as the perfect drink for celebrations like weddings, christenings, graduations and all other great memorable moments in life. However, champagne is just a special sparkling wine and can be drank on any occasion.
There are some wonderful UK sparkling wines made all over the country. Some of the best wineries are found in the south and south west of the UK. Champagne or sparkling wine is a special drink which deserves a special glass if you want to get the very best of the champagne. Many glass manufactures design champagne glasses using different styles to enhance the flavours and the drinking experience. So far, the most common types of glasses are the Champagne tulips, Champagne saucer and the Champagne flutes.
Champagne Flutes
This type of champagne glass is tall and narrow with medium stem. Champagne flute glasses have elegant lines that are best at showing off the wonderful champagne bubbles. If you stick your finger at the bottom of the flute's bowl, you will feel a rough spot. The rough spot is not a mistake, but the spot where bubbles gather before they move to the top of the glass. The mouth of the flute is straight and trumpet flutes have rims with flared design. The flutes are normally used to serve sparkling UK wines of younger vintage since their design ensures that the bubbles last as long as possible and the aroma is retained.
Champagne Saucers
Champagne saucers, also known as champagne coupes, have a unique design that has enabled them to fizz which adds excitement to the drinking experience. The glass has short stem, a wide rim and shallow bowl. These types of champagne glasses are the oldest and were well known during the 1920's and 1930's century when the then champagne connoisseurs used them. They have since been overtaken by flute glasses and nowadays, champagne saucers are not common as the experts find that the design does not prevent the sweet aroma from escaping and the champagne goes flat very quickly. These champagne saucers are best suited for casual parties and weddings.
Champagne Tulips
This type of champagne glass is similar to the champagne flute glass; the only difference is that the rims appear to curve inwards. Champagne tulips have a wider bowl and look rather like normal white wine glasses. Tulip glasses are preferred by experts who like that the curved mouth traps the smell of the champagne. In fact, in the absence of tulip glasses, connoisseurs will use white wine glass instead of saucers and flutes altogether.
Tips for Choosing Champagne Glasses
People who are serious about champagne will do well to invest some money on tulip glasses since they greatly help in appreciating the champagne or sparkling wine. For more casual affairs, you can use less expensive champagne saucers and champagne flutes. In fact, you will realise that the champagne saucers are perfect for glitzy but casual parties. You may also use them for wedding parties since they work very well for such occasions.
