Wow, what an incredible Wimbledon Tounament 2012 turned out to be. The achievement of Andy Murray has been spectacular, not just to reach the final and be beaten by the ice cool Federer but it was the way that he played and his attitude to how he adapted when the going got tough in each of his matches. In this final unlike previous grand slams he did not freeze on the day far from it he came out inspired and played like a heavy weight boxer who was here to prove that he could ko the six times Wimbledon Champion winning the first set in style. He played a great second set to but missed a vital chance on the backhand to break serve and then go on to be two sets up, instead it went one set all. And then there was the game in the third with the Murray serve that had ten deuces and lasted almost twenty minutes you just knew this was the pivotal game of the whole match it went Federers way and with that came the third set.It also took a lot out of Murray, he tired and eventually went down three sets to one.
Murray can be very very proud he played a great match and had a great Tournament, he will surely win Wimbledon one day, over the next four years. However today Federer just had the moments of magic when it was required pulling out winning passes when it was almost impossible. The sign of a true Champion, seven Wimbledon titles now out of eight final appearances, and an incredible eight out of eight semi final wins. And seventeen grand slams to his name. Back to being World number one player, simply a fantastic Tennis player amongst the best that has ever played the game if not the best.
But waht about the achievements of our very own Jonathan Marray in the mens doubles with Denmarks Frederick Nielson, well well well, they had a wild card entry into the Wimbledon 2012 competition. They had played together just four times over the last six years. And yet they made the semi finals as complete under dogs having to play the best in the pairing of Bryan and Bryan not only did they cause the shock of the Tournament (perhaps with the exception of Nadal going out in week one) but they then went on to the final again as underdogs up against the more experienced pairing of Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Romania's Horia Tecau these were last years beaten finalists. So what happened, well they lost the first set 4-6 then won the second 6-4 then took the tie break in the third 7-6 only to throw away an advantage in the fourth set tie break to set up a fith and final set. It all looked too much now as the favourites had a new spring in their step. However Marray and Nielson had an early break in the final set and held their own serve until serving out the final set 6-3. An amazing achievement from the pair, Marray is the first Brittish mens doubles winner since 1936.. Marray at 31 has been a regular on the ATP tour for twelve years struggling to make 23k a year. This win gives him a 130k pay cheque and as well as getting entry into the ATP world finals in November at the O2 arena. Congratulations to the both of them what a film that would make!
And then there was the womens Tournament, with the best will in the world no one saw Serena Williams winning this one, she was not at her best in the earlier rounds but power was the key as she overcame Victoria Azarenka from Belarus who gave Serena a good game but the noise of grunts and high pitched groans only inspired Serena to greater heights and this got her through to the chance of winning her fifth title and equal her sisters record.
In the other semi the Pole Radwanska overcame the more powerful German Kerber with some deft accurate shots that had John Mcenroe claiming that she reminded him of himself not able to play with power and strength but able to play with intelligence, grace and an accurate range of beautiful shots.
In the final Serena made light work of the first set 6-1 but Radwanska played some great Tennis in the second to level 7-5, she then tired and considering that she had been ill the previous two days sh made a real game of it going down 6-2 in the final set.
Like Murray in the men's Radwanska will be champion one day and a great future ahead of her. Serena and sister Venus then went on to win the womens doubles final to show what a great talent they both still are in the Ladies game. Such a shame that Sharapova went out early doors now that would have been some Final.
