This magnificent structure is spread over a vast area of 2.8 square kilometres and is situated on one of the banks of Berach River. It is believed that the fort was constructed by a Mauryan ruler called Chitrangada Mori. According to the legends, it was gifted to Bappa Rawal, the founder of Mewar dynasty as a part of the dowry of Solanki princess whom he married. During the year 1568, this fort was attacked by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. It was subject to much destruction and looting in this attack, after which, it was left in an abandoned state. In the early seventeenth century, this fort was returned to the Rajputs by Mughal Emperor, Jahangir. Chittorgarh Fort was refurbished by British Government in the year 1905. The entire structure was developed over two phases, which began with the building of its entrance in the 5th century and ended with fortifications during the 15th century. Today, this fort is one of the major Udaipur attractions visited by tourists, though many of its portions lie in ruins. The grandeur of Chittorgarh Fort still leaves many of its visitors in awe.
