Definition: A white, mainly English-speaking, World War II veterans' organization which opposed the removal of Coloured voters from the electoral roll in Cape Province. The organization was formed in 1951 by ex-Battle of Britain pilot 'Sailor' Malan and Louis Kane-Berman. The Torch Commando proved to be popular, and was instrumental in organizing large-scale demonstrations against the Apartheid government.
(The name is said to come from its preference for torch-light processions.) The Torch Commando faded from public view after the National Party returned with an even greater majority in the 1953 national elections.
