- 1). Make sure you have all the documents required to fill out your tax return. In addition to your W-2 form(s) you will need the Social Security numbers of any dependents. You also need related records of contributions to retirement accounts, charitable donations and other deductible items plus any non-wage income that you are required to report. To use the traditional Free File, follow Steps 2 and 3 below or, for Free Filable Forms, Steps 5 and 6.
- 2). Go to the Internal Revenue Service website (irs.gov) and select "E-File." Under "Individual Taxpayers," choose "File online for free." (or use the link below). You will see a description of the traditional Free File program and Free Filable Forms. Your income must be below a certain amount to use traditional Free File (for 2008 this was $56,000). If you have too much income or prefer to fill out the forms yourself you may choose Free Filable Forms instead.
- 3). Browse thee companies listed if you choose traditional Free File. Some companies have restrictions in addition to the IRS income limit. Most companies will file your state tax return electronically as well if you wish. Read the terms carefully. The federal tax return is free, but there may be a charge for preparing and filing a state income tax return.
- 4). Click on the link for the company you choose. You'll be asked to create an account. Once you have done so, follow the instructions to use the tax preparation software (each company has its own software so the procedures will vary). When you are finished you'll need to electronically sign your return to e-file it. You may choose to print the return out and mail it in if you prefer.
- 5). Choose Free Filable Forms if you are not eligible for any of the free third-party Free File programs. Start by creating a username and password. This allows you to save your work and return to it later if need be. The system includes an online calculator and help tools to assist you. However, you cannot file state tax returns using Free Filable Forms.
- 6). Follow the instructions to choose and complete the forms you need. Most IRS tax forms are available through Free Filable Forms. Once you've finished preparing your tax return, follow the directions to electronically sign and file it. Alternatively you can print out your return, sign it and mail it in.
