DIY: How to Replace Pool Lights

    • 1). Shut the power off to the pool area. If you do not have the circuit breaker marked, use a circuit tester to ensure there is no electricity running to the pool area.

    • 2). Use a screwdriver to remove the pilot screw from the light you are replacing. The pilot screw is located at the top of the light.

    • 3). Remove the light fixture from its casing. Pool lights typically have enough wire to allow you to place the light fixture by the side of the pool. Make sure to note how the wire fits back into the light niche.

    • 4). Remove the clamps or screws that hold the glass lens to the fixture.

    • 5). Use a towel to gently unscrew the bulb and remove it from the fixture.

    • 6). Determine what type of pool light you have. The manufacturer's information, including the model number, name, voltage and wattage of your light, is typically on a sticker that is located inside the light housing. If the sticker is no longer there, take the bulb you are replacing with you to ensure you get the correct one.

    • 7). Screw the new bulb into the fixture. Check to make sure that the bulb works by having an assistant watch it while you briefly turn on the circuit breaker.

    • 8). Make sure the bulb is securely screwed into the fixture. Install the new gasket and put the glass lens back in place. Tighten the screws or clamps.

    • 9). Place the lamp underwater to check for leaks. While there may be a bubble or two, you should not see water coming out from around the edges.

    • 10

Put the fixture back into the light niche. Make sure the wire is back in its proper place. Turn the power back on.
