Tim Deluxe Interview
< Continued from page 3
RS: Let's go a little with your remixing. How do you approach a remix as opposed to an original production?
Tim Deluxe: I've got to listen to it and just want to do it. I've got to be able to see where I can take it and make it and make it better. I don't want to do it just for the sake of it. I've stopped doing remixes for cash a long time ago because it's not really that creative.
RS: I was going to ask you well then, in that respect, would you approach a pop record like Kylie differently than something more underground like Layo and Bushwhacka?
Tim Deluxe: No, it's the same. Are there elements in the song that you can use and make work for your mix and then that's how it works. No, I approach a mix and remix exactly the same, it doesn't matter who the artist is.
RS: I read you're a big fan of Air's Moon Safari album, how do you like the new Talkie Walkie album by them?
Tim Deluxe: Yeah, it's wicked. I've just got it the other day man, big on it. I love that "Universal Traveler" track, it's number four or five.
RS: Do you all get the DVD that goes with it over there in the UK?
Tim Deluxe: I've just got the CD, but I want to check it out.
RS: OK. What was your inspiration to cover the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army," did you hear and just go I got to do that?
Tim Deluxe: Yeah, yeah, it was that simple.
RS: OK, and how's that going, is it coming out?
Tim Deluxe: No, Jack White's turned it down. Apparently loads of people have done cover versions of it but he hasn't granted permission for any of them. It's just a shame because if he'd come to a club or come to one of the nights in Ibiza and saw what mayhem that it creates on the dance floor, I'm sure he would have changed his mind because it's absolutely awesome.
Carl played it in techno sets and he drops into it and he's just going on about how it's one of his biggest records, it's crazy.
RS: So what's right now your favorite piece of studio gear?
Tim Deluxe: My XP1200 drum machine. I've gone back to that again.
RS: Also, I've got to ask you, what happened with this BMX bike accident I keep reading about?
Tim Deluxe: It's was just that I was drunk man, just pissed up and I thought it would be quite funny to drive past my mate Eric Morillo who was on stage at the time. I lost control of the bike and went over the edge and then smashed my face up.
RS: Is that the story behind the beard I am reading about..
Tim Deluxe: No, I thought screw it, because I've always had short hair and at the moment I've got really long hair and a beard. I'm into my guitars at the minute man so it just fits. That's what I said earlier, I've got loads of guitar-y stuff ready to come out.
RS: Awesome. Is there anything you want to say to the people out there?
Tim Deluxe: Just come and check us out live and check out the album. Go out and grab a copy of the album.
