Preventing work related injuries requires a change in both management and employees attitudes.
As an employee make sure that: 1.
You avoid any situations that may result in a personal injury, especially if you are working alone.
Lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, using dangerous machinery or tools are some examples to not be carried out on your own.
Try and make sure that someone else is present to supervise or help you with the task at hand to prevent an accident.
2.
Wearing the appropriate uniform of protective gear is also essential.
If you are exposed to any chemical or physical dangers, for example, gas, dust, noise, and temperature - make sure you are safe from any harm.
If you have not been provided with the relevant safety wear, inform your employer or seek any other options available to better your surroundings.
3.
If you have a manual job and this requires any form of heavy lifting, make sure that you have been trained to lift correctly.
Make sure that your back is straight and bend your knees, do not bend over whilst trying to manoeuvre heavy objects, it may result in a minor or severe back injury.
If you are trying to reach for something, try not to do this alone, ask someone to help you and make sure you have a secure spot to hold onto to avoid losing your balance.
4.
Invest in good quality equipment and protective wear to prevent personal injury.
5.
Report and be aware of any spillages, hazards, obstructions or faults that may result in someone suffering from an accident at work.
Inform your supervisor or employer and make sure that all accidents are recorded in the 'accident book'.
This is for the benefit of both the employees and their employers to ensure the accident doesn't happen again.
6.
Most injuries at work can be prevented using common sense.
If a situation feels unsafe, seek for help or advice or speak to you superiors about your concern of any potential danger to you and to others.
7.
If you suffered from an accident at work due to the negligence of your employer, you maybe entitled to make a personal injury claim.
Seek the advice of a personal injury solicitor who will be able to provide you with more information about your entitlement and any financial loss you may be eligible too.
