Video: Sunless Tanners: White Pale Skin Won't Take on Color

Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Erin Hendley, Professional Makeup Artist, and today I'm here to address the issue for sunless tanner; pale skin won't take on sunless tanning color. And a lot of people have actually said recently and white skin usually takes color quite well and it's usually pretty absorbent. So, what we're going to do today is do one step further and we're going to go in with a primer. Now, a lot of us know that primers are an important thing that goes on when we apply our makeup, and the same can go for sunless tanner. So, while I'm applying, I'll describe what primer does. First of all, a little bit goes a long way, so, you can use a brush or your fingertips. But, just know that you don't need to glob it on. So, primer is basically, one thing, it soaks up sweat and oil. So, if you tend to have oily skin, this is great to just eliminate some of that going on. But, what's also great about the primer, specifically for any foundation or makeup that you're wearing, as well as the sunless tanning lotions is that it creates this barrier between the skin and the product and it allows it for longer lasting foundation or makeup application as well as holding the makeup in place. And think about priming a wall, you paint it white so whatever color you're putting on the surface sticks and reads through the color. And that's the same with the primer for the face. If there are certain areas on your face that do take the color, you don't need to prime it as much. Really just focus in on the areas that need it. So, now that we have the primer applied, we're going to go in with our sunless tanner and see how well it holds up. For sunless tanners, I like to use a sponge, it soaks up quite a bit of the product, but that's just to eliminate over application. And I like to give it a couple of seconds to actually soak in. And perhaps whoever found that the color wasn't sticking to their skin maybe, they need to go in with a slightly darker shade. So, here we are going in and the key to remember is that sunless tanners have a set time and that means that when you're applying it, you shouldn't see this drastic change in color off the bat. Some more like hair dye, it create, creates and becomes more vibrant after it sits on the skin awhile and actually blends itself in. So, keep that in mind too; starting with one layer and then go in with another one after 30 minutes or so if you still feel like it's not enough. You can see that we're already getting a nice tan here. So, after we let it sit 30 minutes, we can dictate whether or not we want to go in with an even more tan look or if we'd like the way it is . I'm Erin Hendley, and I've just address the issues for people that have pale skin, how to get their color to stay put.
