- 1). Collect horse manure from a horse stall by combing through the stall's shavings with a pitch fork to bring the solid clumps of manure to the surface. Place the manure in a wheel barrow to transport it to a compost pile.
- 2). Collect other compost items in preparation to build your pile. Good compost items include organic green items that are filled with nitrogen, such as kitchen scraps or grass clippings. These items should be layered on a compost pile along with organic, carbon-filled brown compost items, such as straw or dead leaves. Horse manure is classified as an organic green because of it's high nitrogen content.
- 3). Build your pile by layering organic browns and organic greens like a lasagna. The organic brown layers must be twice as thick as the organic green layers. Soak each layer with a garden hose so that the pile is uniformly as damp as a wrung out sponge. Add some manure to each green layer.
- 4). Pile your compost so that the pile is at least 3 cubic feet. Do not make the pile more than 5 cubic feet. Piles larger than this are difficult to manage.
