Whisper Memory Game
Separate a classroom of students into two groups. Form each group into two lines, with students are standing next to each other. Starting at one end, whisper a "memory verse" of Scripture in its entirety to the first child in each group. That child must turn to a classmate standing next to him and repeat the verse from memory. That classmate then turns to the next child and repeats the verse, again by whispering it. The last child in each group says the Bible verse aloud. The line that states the verse closest to the correct version wins.
Unscramble the Verse
Write a Scripture verse on a chalkboard or a dry-erase board. Give each student an index card and instruct them to write a word of the verse on the card. Erase the verse from the board and tack the the cards, out of order, on a bulletin board. Let students take turns coming up and arranging the verse in the correct order, from memory. Time each student, and award a prize to the one who can put the verse in order in the shortest amount of time.
Find the Treasure
Give students yellow or gold construction paper. Ask the students to cut the paper into circles and o use markers or crayons to decorate one side to resemble a gold coin. On the back of each coin, write a word or phrase of a Bible verse.
Bury the coins in a large container filled with sand. Tell the students to dig for "treasure" to find as many coins as possible. The student with the most coins has to repeat the Bible verse. Take turns to allow all students to repeat the Bible verse.
Musical Penny
Twist a "musical chairs" game to your advantage to help students memorize a verse of Scripture. Write a verse on a board and read it aloud several times to the class before erasing it. Arrange students so they are all sitting in a circle, holding hands. Give one child a penny. Begin playing music from a CD player. Ask the child with the penny to pass it to an adjoining student.
Periodically stop the music. The child with the penny has to try and recite the Bible verse from memory. The child who can recite it completely without any mistakes wins.
