- 1). Update virus definitions. Windows anti-virus identifies viruses based on downloaded definitions that allow Windows to recognize similar code. If you suspect you have a virus, but Windows has not identified it yet, to update virus definitions, open the "Control Panel," clicking "Security" and then click on "Security Center." Then select "Malware protection," and find the "Update" function.
- 2). Configure firewall. Open the Windows Security Center and then select "Windows Firewall" from the menu. If you are having problems accessing a certain site, add it to the "Exceptons" list, which is under the "Settings" menu. If you want to block a certain site, you can add it to the "Block" list, which is under the "General" tab.
- 3). Download updates for the software. Much like the rest of the Windows operating system, the Security Center receives periodic software updates that fix bugs and known issues. To turn on automatic updating, open the "Control Panel," click on "Security" and then open the Security Center. Then select "Automatic updating" from the menu and click "Turn on now."
- 4). Get rid of software conflicts. Windows Security Center cannot run concurrently with another security software suite, and attempting to run both programs will result in errors and unexpected behavior. Uninstall your other security programs or turn off the Windows Security protection by going to the "Security" utility in the "Control Panel" and then switch the settings in the "Security Essentials" area to the "off" position.
