How to Fertilize the Ground for Evergreens

    • 1). In early May, mix half of a can of beer and a shot glass of fish emulsion with two gallons of water.

    • 2). Water your evergreen thoroughly with your beer and fish emulsion mixture. Use one two-gallon serving per evergreen plant.

    • 3). One week later, sprinkle a cup of Epsom salts over the soil around your evergreen plant.

    • 4). In late May, estimate your evergreen's height.

    • 5). Measure ½ pound of lightweight lawn fertilizer per 6 feet of height. For instance, if your tree is 3 feet tall, it needs ¼ of fertilizer. If it's 12 feet, it should get one pound of lawn fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
If your evergreen plant flowers, Baker says to use garden food instead of lawn fertilizer.

    • 6). In late June, repeat step 5 to fertilize your evergreen plant.
