- 1). Check the spark plug. If fouled, clean it. Ensure the spark plug is gapped properly. If damaged, replace it. Check for a spark by removing the spark plug from the cylinder, connecting it to the spark plug wire and touching the tip of the plug to the cylinder while pulling the starter rope. If no spark occurs, replace the plug.
- 2). Check the fuel level. If the fuel tank has run dry, refill it. Push the fuel pump bulb at least five times to ensure proper fuel flow.
- 3). Check if the engine is flooded. Remove the spark plug and dry it off. Set the choke lever to RUN. Crank the engine 10 to 15 times with the starter cord to clear the combustion chamber. Refit the spark plug. Connect the spark plug wire. Set the choke lever. Start the engine.

- 3). Ensure that the engine is running at full throttle when advancing the string.
- 1). Ensure the trimmer is being operated at full throttle.
- 2). Check the fuel/oil mixture to ensure that it is not to rich with oil.
- 3). Check the air filter to see if it is dirty. Clean or replace the filter, if necessary.
- 4). Check to see if the carburetor needs adjustment.
- 1). If the cutting head will not turn properly, there may begrass or other plant material wound around the cutting head. Ensure that the trimmer is operatied at full throttle and that the grass is not too tall to prevent this.
- 2). If the spool retainer is hard to turn, lubricate the nut with grease before replacing it.
- 3). If the engine will not idle, adjust the carburetor.
