Landscaping Design 101

Landscaping is an important part of keeping your property's value and beauty intact. Whether it is a garden, pond, or storage, a landscaping design and maintenance company can work with you to achieve maximum results for your property.

Gardens can be decorated with shading such as umbrellas and sail shades. Gardens can also include a table and chairs. A hammock may be set up between trees to give the garden an appealing look, as well as giving you a place to relax. Using trees to support the hammock is more natural-looking than hammocks that rely on steel support. You should keep your garden looking as natural as possible by using wood furniture and very minimal man-made features.

You should also consider storage for your backyard. Storage is a must for keeping your tools and equipment out of the way, thus keeping your garden looking as clean as possible. A storage deck is a rectangular box that can be locked and tucked away in a corner or placed near the house. Make sure you keep water-resistant wicker or hardwood for your backyard furniture, and store them in the storage area during off-season.

If you choose to have a water feature in your backyard, there are three choices: a cascading waterfall, a pond, or a stream. The cascading waterfall can be done by a landscaper by building a hill and surrounding the waterfall with rocks and shrubbery. Streams can also be built by landscapers, and are usually framed with multiple rocks that can lead to a second water feature such is a pond or waterfall. Many people choose the stream as their backyard water feature because the sound is not too overwhelming and it provides aesthetic appeal. A pond can be filled with a variety of fish and plant life, but will require more upkeep and clean-out once a year.

If you have a swimming pool, pool décor such as waterfall rocks can add a nice touch to the design of the pool area. Natural landscaping and boulder waterfalls can be peaceful and natural looking in the pool area. Formal pools feature ornate and classical shapes, materials, and styles. Natural pools have the waterfall features, and modern pools incorporate straight lines and chic materials such as glass tile. Faux stone can be colored and transformed for a more rugged or antiquated appeal. Choose lighting that is well-lit and safe. LED landscape lighting is energy-efficient, while illuminating focal points and pathway lights. Fiber optic lights can highlight water features. Colored LED lights can set the mood to calm or exciting, depending upon the color chosen.

Fire features can add warmth, light, and dynamic focal points to a backyard. Formal fire tables, bowls, and custom outdoor fireplaces can be installed to create a formal fire feature area, while a natural fire feature area would include tiki torches, volcanic fire pits, or camp-style fire pits.

Retaining walls are another feature that can add privacy to your backyard, without compromising the aesthetic appeal. For a formal landscape, natural stone or boulder placements can be installed, and for a natural look, natural veneer stone can be used, and boulder rock outcroppings can blend into the landscape.
