The bottom 10 percent of these techs had wages below $12 per hour, and the top 10 percent were making $30.24 per hour and higher, or $62,890 per year and more. The middle 50 percent of biotechnicians had salaries of $14.77 to $24.10 per hour, or $30,730 to $50,120 per year.
- Biotechnicians working for the federal government had an average salary of $17.47 per hour as of 2010. Those working in colleges, universities and professional schools were making $19.93 per hour on average. Higher average salaries were available in scientific research and development services, at $21.52 per hour, and in pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, at $22.59 per hour.
- The top-paying state for biotechnicians in 2010 was Connecticut, where these workers had an average salary of $24.30 per hour, or $50,550 per year. Rounding out the top five states were Massachusetts, where biotechnicians had an average hourly pay rate of $23.52, California with an average of $23.12, Maryland at $22.82 and Minnesota at $22.67.
- Biotechnicians in three U.S. metropolitan areas earned more than $60,000 on average in 2010. The average salary for biotechnicians was $30.42 per hour, or $63,270 per year, in the greater San Francisco area, which ranked first in the country. The average biotechnician salary was $30.25 per hour in Rochester, Minnesota, and $28.98 per hour in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk region of Connecticut.
