Ganesha- A New Interpretation

The word "Sri Ganesha" is uttered before beginning any auspicious work and this ritual has been taking place since time immemorial. Ganesha, popularly known and easily recognized as the Elephant God, is one of the most important deities of the Hindu pantheon. Before every undertaking, be it laying of the foundation of a house, or opening of a shop or beginning any other work, Lord Ganesha is first worshipped so as to invoke his blessings.

Is it true that if one does not offer prayers to Ganesha at the outset of a task the expected success, prosperity and wish fulfillment in life i. e. "riddhi" and "siddhi" shall elude or any such activity undertaken will meet with failure.

Ganesh has many names. The main ones are Ganapati (lord of the tribe or attendants), Vighneshvara(controller of all obstacles), Vinayaka(the prominent leader), Gajaanana(elephant-faced), Gajadhipati(Lord of elephants), Lambkarna(long-eared), Lambodara(pendant-bellied) and Ekadanta(having one tusk).

Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. He is depicted as having four arms which is symbolize him as universal ruler. In one hand he is shown to be holding a shell, in another a discus, in third a club or a sweet cake and in the fourth a water lily. Ganesha has one tusk and is known as the single-tusked.

The vehicle of Ganesha is a mouse. As rats generally succeed in gnawing their way through every obstruction, the rat symbolizes this god's ability to destroy every obstacle. Ganesh with his pot-bellied body and mouse as vehicle could never hope to compete.

Lord Ganesha also to be worshipped in Yoga Mahavidya(Yoga learning). The first chakra of yoga is Muladhara Chakra. The Muladhara Chakra has been given special importance in yoga. It exists at the lowest part of the back bone just above the anus and below the genital
