How to Obtain a CNA License in Florida

    • 1). Visit the Florida Certified Nursing Assistants Council "Continuing Education" webpage (see Resources). Click on the "List of Training Programs" link to access approved Florida CNA courses. If you are at least 18 years old or have a high school diploma or GED, you do not have to take a training course. However, you should take a course to prepare for the CNA exam. Select and attend a course.

    • 2). Open the "Certified Nursing Assistant Candidate Information Bulletin" exam guide (see Resources). Prometric, the exam administrator, publishes this guide to assist in the Florida CNA application and exam process. Use the content outlines in the bulletin and your course materials to study for the Knowledge Test (the written portion) and the Clinical Skills Test (the hands-on portion). You should also use the "Clinical Skills Checklist" to practice for the Clinical Skills Test (see Resources).

    • 3). Fill out the "Florida Certified Nursing Assistant Application" and corresponding addendum. You can find both of these forms in the exam bulletin. You can test in a facility where you work or at a Prometric testing site. If you have lived in Florida continuously over the past five years, select the "FDLE Screening" background check. If not, select the "FBI Screening" background check. You will receive further instructions on FBI fingerprint requirements after submitting your application.

    • 4). Make out a money order, company check or cashier's check, payable to "Prometric." You may also pay by MasterCard or Visa. As of 2010, the exam fees were $36 for one exam to $97 for both exams, depending on language (English or Spanish for the written exam) and audio options. You may order an audio recording for the written exam. As of 2010, the FDLE Screening is $34, and the FBI Screening is $53.25. Submit the form and fees to the facility if you are testing at a local facility. Submit them to the following address if you are testing at a regional Prometric test site:

      Prometric

Attn: Florida Nursing Assistant Testing Program

      1260 Energy Lane

      St. Paul, MN 55108

    • 5). Take your exam. You must pass both parts within two years. If you fail either part three times, you must complete 120 hours of training in an approved program.
