- 1). Prepare a fruit salad with equal amounts banana, cantaloupe and oranges. These foods contain potassium, and three to four extra servings of food rich in potassium should be added to your weekly diet if you are taking diuretics.
- 2). Cook sweet potatoes or spinach. These are also rich in potassium, and can be used as additional potassium-rich food added to your diet. Both can be prepared by steaming, boiling or in the microwave.
- 3). Avoid enhancing food with salt or seasonings that contain salt. A salt-free diet is desired. According to the Mayo Clinic you should aim for an intake of less than 1,500 milligrams of daily sodium.
- 4). Do not add monosodium glutamate (MSG) to your cooking or use prepared foods that contain MSG.
- 5). Avoid recipes that call for caffeine ingredients, such as coffee or chocolate.
