How Does a Coat Differ From a Jacket?

Many people get confused in identifying the difference between a jacket and a coat.
Some would say that these types of clothing are just similar and can be worn interchangeably.
Even some experts also get confused in identifying the difference between the two.
A coat is a type of clothing worn by both men and women.
The main purpose in wearing a coat is to have a warm feeling.
It is the reason why coats are very common to cold countries.
In the early 19th century, coats were part of the fashion world and were worn by most people.
Coats are sometimes called overcoats and often mistakenly identified as undercoats.
Meanwhile, jackets are shorter than the usual undercoats.
The length of a jacket usually reaches to the upper thigh.
Since many designers have created many alterations to both coats and jackets, people are sometimes calling coats as jackets and vice versa.
However, each of these two types of clothing has features that will help you distinguish their difference.
Jackets are now referred to as suits or suit jackets while coats are considered as sport coats.
In fashion, coats are defined as something used for more casual gatherings.
These are also called sport coats due to their purest forms.
Coats are usually worn when doing outdoor activities.
Sport coats are usually made of more durable and heavier fabrics like twills and tweeds while some of them are designed like the early form of camouflage.
Sport coats provide a more relaxed look and may have padding on the shoulder, though these mostly have no padding.
These don't necessarily require a matching pair of pants or trousers.
Presently, jackets are worn with matching trousers or pants and are considered as a piece of men's clothing for more formal events.
Most men wear a jacket with the appropriate trousers to have a smooth silhouette.
If you don't want to have a weird look, avoid wearing a jacket with non-matching pants.
Men wear suit jackets to have a dressy look and especially overcoats.
Unlike usual coats, jackets have padding on the shoulders and canvas interlining.
Suit jackets usually have piped pockets, constructed lapels, lining, and buttons, making them more proper in formal occasions.
