Contemporary Worship Offering Ideas

    Larger Offering Containers

    • Share needs within the congregation. Since the church uses money donations to help members of the congregation, explain that if some provide practical assistance, the church can use any money given for other church needs. For example, a mechanic might give a note donating his services. Someone else might give packaged food. Provide large offering plates, but not so large they cannot be passed down the pews. explaining that giving is an act of worship as well as reaching out to others. The members of the congregation may give whatever they feel led to give, whether this is money, a box of macaroni or a gift card. Provide a container in the church for larger donations.

    Box at the Back

    • Instead of making the worship offering a special focus of the service, design an offering box and set it toward the back of the sanctuary where members of the congregation will pass it coming in and leaving the sanctuary. Add a sign to explain the purpose of the box. Include envelopes that those attending the service may use if desired. For security reasons, make sure the worship offering box has a lock, allowing offerings to be slipped through a slot on the top.

    At Each Pew

    • Provide a worship offering cloth bag with a sturdy zipper suitable for cash, checks and envelopes for each pew. Create worship offering containers with brackets that fit over the back of each pew. Those attending the church service should be instructed to remove the container and pass it down their pew and only their pew. The last person in the pew zips the bag closed and hangs the offering container on the back of the pew in front of him. Ushers can pick up the offering bags at the end of each pew during or directly after the service.

    Sunday School

    • Teach children to tithe, giving a tenth of their money to God. Show them how to create their own personal worship offering boxes. They might make them from decorated cardboard boxes with a lids in which they cut slits for their offerings. They might cut a box in a church design from cardboard, decorate it and add a slot for their money. They can also create the offering box from craft sticks or other materials. The idea is to teach children that giving is also part of worship.

    Online

    • Many churches now direct people to their websites. Some websites might show little more than a mission statement, beliefs and a schedule of services. Others are more interactive. These websites can include a place where church members may give their offering online.
