- 1). First, you must get your cat comfortable with being brushed because this is going to be key in reducing the shedding. If you have a long haired cat it is best to brush them everyday, for short hair a couple times a week is sufficient.
- 2). Cats shed their undercoat, so by brushing them daily you collect the undercoat in your brush and prevent it from ending up on your clothes and furniture. Always brush with the grain of the hair, working your way towards the tail. To make collecting the undercoat easier, spray your brush with a coat of hairspray, let it dry then spraying it again. This provides the brush with a tacky surface for the hair to adhere to.
- 3). For the best removal of the undercoat, use a de-shedding tool such as the Furminator. These tools are specifically designed to remove the undercoat, and I have found great success using with them.
- 4). When you are finished brushing and using your de-shedding tool, wipe your kitty down with a warm, damp washcloth. The damp washcloth will collect an loose hairs, as well as remove any residual hairspray left from the comb.
As an additional precaution, you can incorporate an omega fatty acids supplement into your kitty's diet. These essential oils improve the health and appearance of your cat's coat as well as aid in decreasing the amount of shedding.
