DJs are drawn to April Fools like bees are drawn to Spring pollen. There is no keeping them from pulling pranks on that day and oddly, many listeners seem to usually fall for it. Okay: the ?stats? are in and here are some of the highlights from this year:
Portland Pet Owners Fooled By DJs
The "Mark and Dave Show" on KEX convinced gullible listeners that they would be fined up to $150 if their dogs, cats and ferrets weren't buckled into seatbelts.
The local animal shelter received 50 calls and the sheriff's office got 30 calls asking if the information was real.
Howard Stern Fakes His Own Demise
In the midst of indecency hearings in Washington and under the gun, Howard Stern began his show this day with the manager from his New York City flagship station announcing Stern's show had been removed from all the pressure. Afterwards, 2 other DJs played music for an hour promising "all the fun without the filth". Listeners from around the country called the show to complain until Stern finally came on and announced it was just a prank. He said, "We are back for anybody who was stupid enough to fall for that."
Montana Morning Show Declares Snow Day
Ross Strauser and Leah Lindsay from Mix 96, Kalispell, Montana, saw a light snowfall on April 1 and decided to tell their listeners it was a snow day causing a bit of confusion which resulted in some parents kept kids home
Morning Show Almost Gives Family A Collective Stroke
Brad Booker and Diane Douglas from WSTO-FM (Hot 96 FM), Evansville, Indiana, repeatedly said on-the-air "their thoughts and prayers were with" the family of New York Yankees hitting Don Mattingly.
Mattingly and his wife were in Japan at the time. Unfortunately, Mattingly?s two sons attend Central High School in Evansville and upon arriving that day were informed something terrible had happened to their father. Booker and Douglas later fessed up they meant to tell everyone he just cut himself shaving. Meanwhile, the sons and other family members were quite disturbed by the fake report.
South African Morning Show Claims Sharks In River
A J Venter and Butch James from East Coast Radio told their listeners sharks had swum up the Umgeni River and a sandbank had been breached. People rush to see the sight and the station was inundated with calls. When people arrived, the only things swimming around were Venter and James.
Right Wing Wackiness
Peter Blute and Scott Allen Miller from WRKO, Boston led listeners to believe the station was switching format to ?liberal talk?.
Morning Zoo Cancels Superbowl
The WAPE, Jacksonville, Florida ?Morning Zoo? announced the NFL was pulling the Superbowl out of Jacksonville next year. Word spread quickly to other states and when the Super Bowl Host Committee found out, they were none too happy.
