Kidney Stones in Cats - Can Poor Eating Habits Cause This Condition?

We all love our pets and are vulnerable to those loving stares at the dinner table.
Cats are masters at manipulating us into giving them what they want, especially food.
But if your cat if prone to kidney stones this might be the wrong thing to do.
Research has shown that when a cat eats their urine pH level tends rises.
I can hear you saying "SO WHAT"! Please let me explain.
Most kidney stones are simply crystal formations that have become too large to pass through the urethra.
For cats which eat constantly the alkaline in their blood tends to stay elevated, high alkaline levels lead to excessive crystal formation, making them vulnerable to kidney stones.
More frequent meals = More crystal formation = A Higher Probability of Kidney Stones   The next contributing factor is obesity.
It is somewhat logical that these two kidney stone causes could be linked, since obese cats tend to consume more food than their slimmer counterparts.
So if your cat has had one too many goldfish, a weight reduction program should be in order.
The steps for melting those excess pounds off are fairly simple ones:   * Reduce food intake.
Instead of feeding you cat 6 meals a day cut it back to 3 or maybe even 2, trust me they will still love you.
Another idea is to consult with your veterinarian for advice on a low calorie diet program.
  * Exercise - I am not advocating getting Miss Kitty a jogging suit and placing her on the tread mill, even though that sound like a good idea.
The simple approach here is to simply raise your cats activity level either by taking them outside for a few minutes, buying them a new toy (feather toy) which gets their metabolism going while setting aside 10 minutes a day of quality play time.
It is important to stay with the program until you achieve the desired results.
Less food + Exercise = Weight Loss   After implementing the above steps there are a few additional preventative steps you can take to prevent kidney stone formation in cats.
Give them plenty of fresh, filtered water to drink, a diet low in magnesium and minerals, and consider a homeopathic supplement.
Homeopathic remedies are very effective in maintaining urinary tract health and reducing the risk of kidney stones because they contain natural tonics that are effective in strengthening and maintaining a healthy urinary tract.
Another important advantage of herbal remedies for kidney stones in cats is that they are generally considered to be very safe.
