- 1). Locate a printed image to use as a template to trace on to the leather. You can use any type of design or image, but avoid using highly detailed designs with complex edges to make an applique.
- 2). Place a piece of fabric transfer paper face down on the leather. Use light transfer paper for dark leather and black transfer paper for light colors.
- 3). Place your image face up on the leather, on top of the transfer paper, and trace the image using a pencil. You will need to apply some pressure when drawing so the transfer design will adhere.
- 4). Cut around the traced border of the design using a pair of leather-cutting scissors. Start cutting in a corner, and work slowly around the edge.
- 5). Create leather cutwork designs using a craft knife with a heavy blade. Place your piece of leather on a self-healing mat and then carefully cut the design. Start in a corner of the design, press the blade through the leather and pull the knife to work your way around the design. When cutting with a craft knife, face the sharp blade away from you when working.
