How to Install a PTO Shaft

    • 1). Dislodge and remove the locking nut and washer from the PTO assembly with an adjustable wrench. Install a protective sheet at the end of the PTO shaft to prevent bearing surface.

    • 2). Apply brake cleaner to the male and female threads of the PTO shaft to remove oil and grease. Do not use mineral spirits on the threads. Do not allow the de-greaser to come into contact with the shaft bearing.

    • 3). Apply a medium strength anaerobic adhesive to the shaft threads. Thread the PTO shaft to the PTO assembly. Torque the PTO shaft bolt. Do not over-tighten.

    • 4). Place the PTO ring gear and coupling on the clutch adapter plate. Insert the ring gear bolts and tighten with an adjustable wrench.

    • 5). Apply a light coat of lubricant to the PTO shaft bearing and inner threads of the clutch adapter plate for easy installation. Install the clutch adapter plate and coupling onto the PTO assembly using the shaft bearing as a guide.

    • 6). Remove the protective sleeve from the PTO end's bearing race. Align the coupling's top bolthole with the hub's top bolthole to make it accessible though the PTO's housing tool window.

    • 7). Install the PTO assembly on to the engine using the pulley bearing as a guide to align flush with the drive-line shaft.

    • 8). Install and torque stainless steel bolts through the PTO housing and into the engine's female guideposts. Install each coupling and hub bolt and torque 1 and 1/2 turns to assist in coupling and hub alignment. Bar the engine and insert the remaining bolts. Torque all bolts to 258 pounds per foot. Check whether the crank shaft play range covers within .02 and .42 millimeters.
