- 1). Search for car images available in magazines and on the Internet or take a snapshot of your own car. A variety of images of different types of cars viewed from different angles will provide useful visual references to help you design a wide range of cartoon cars.
- 2). Place a sheet of tracing paper over your chosen car image. Take your pencil, and trace the outline of the car. Observe your traced copy, and exaggerate some significant features of the car. For example, you could turn your headlamps into eyes and eyebrows, enlarge the front vendor into a nose and turn the front bumper into a talking, smiling or sad mouth. Also exaggerate and alter the shape of the car, so that it looks simplified and comical.
- 3). Place the traced drawing of your cartoon version of the car directly onto a page of your sketchbook. Take your pencil, and re-trace your cartoon car image onto the paper. Press down hard with your pencil, so that it imprints onto the paper beneath. Remove your tracing paper, and with a fine black marker pen, draw over the imprint in your sketchbook. You now have the basic frame for your cartoon car.
- 4). Draw additional car features, such as distinguishing markings, radio aerials, car toys that hang inside the car or numbers and logos on the body of the car, that are not contained in the original source image. A reference image is only a visual aid to help you get started and, in no way, should it be copied. You have to create your own cartoon car design.
- 5). Color your cartoon car with your art marker pens, colored pencils or another color medium of your choice. Use plain color to create a flat two-dimensional cartoon car, or alternatively, you can add light and shade to make it more three-dimensional. Remember to leave white areas in your drawing to represent areas of light. You can also create shade through using lighter or darker shades of color.
