Choosing your perfect hotel

Years ago finding accommodation for the night was easy for travellers; inns were sited a day's ride apart and that's where the coach stopped.

Things were simple back then. For a start, very few people travelled outsideBritainand those who did had "staff" to organise lodgings for their Grand Tour.

These days choosing hotels in Luton,London or Llandudno can be a nightmare, not just because there are so many to consider, but also because we are bombarded with information to confuse the choice.

The secret is to decide what matters most to you. If you are travelling with your family then obviously you'll need to make sure the facilities and menu are appropriate for the younger members of the party.

For some people fluffy towels and free cosmetics really make their stay special while others will want to check out the hotel's eco credentials before they will step over the threshold.

Business travellers often have to book with certain chains of hotels decided centrally by their employer or at least keep within an agreed room rate.

Price is important to most people so always check you understand what you will be paying and what is included. Never book an hotel without asking about discount deals or scanning their website for offers. If you are likely to be returning to the area ask about loyalty discounts.

Location is almost always important whether your stay is for business or pleasure. But even if you don't need to be near a certain venue or attraction, proximity to a cement works isn't a good idea so carefully check out where your hotel is.

Ring the hotel and ask about the restaurant and prices, wifi and room service so you know what you're getting.

If you like a little luxury seek out an hotel with spa or sports facilities and make sure these are included in the price. If you really need your golf fix check the hotel's course isn't hosting a huge charity tournament at the same time as your stay.

If you will have time to explore the area ring the hotel and ask about recommended restaurants, local attractions or events. Staff should have a good knowledge of the area and be keen to enhance your stay by suggesting interesting days out.

Once you have decided what it important to you in your choice of hotel only then you can trawl the review web sites. But beware, some reviewers may not be genuine, have an axe to grind or may be serial complainers. Take the comments with a large pinch of salt unless you trust the web site
