The Importance of Chlorophyll

    Chlorophyll and Photosynthesis

    • The most important function of chlorophyll is its connection to photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight in a plant. Chlorophyll then uses the sunlight's energy to create carbohydrates from water and carbon dioxide. This process is called photosynthesis and without it, the plant would die. Chlorophyll's connection to photosynthesis is also important to human life, as humans not only consume plants, but use plants daily for oxygen.

    The Plant's Blood

    • According to Liz Barrington of Natural Body Healing, chlorophyll is sometimes referred to as "the plant's blood" because of it's importance to plant life. Chlorophyll is crucial to the respiration and growth of a plant, just as blood is crucial to a human's physiobiological needs.

    Anticarcinogenic Properties

    • When humans consume chlorophyll, either as a supplement or as a liquid, one major benefit is an improved immune system. Chlorophyllin is derived from chlorophyll and can increase the activity within immune cells, including B and T cells. Immune cells are crucial to a human's overall well-being. Cancer patients and people with autoimmune deficiency disorders usually have a low immune cell count. While chlorophyll on its own won't cure cancer or disease, it can contribute to remission by helping to increase the number of immune cells. Chlorophyll contains anticarcinogenic properties that have the ability to slow down cancer activity.

    Chlorophyll and Cardiovascular Disease

    • According to Natural Body Healing, Austrian scientists have discovered that chlorophyll can lower bad cholesterol, a leading factor of heart disease and heart attacks. Basically, chlorophyll helps to decrease the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or bad cholesterol.

    Other Benefits

    • Chlorophyll is a natural antioxidant and helps neutralize free radicals within the body. Chlorophyll also has a cleansing effect on a person's blood, which can be greatly beneficial during any sort of detoxification process. Chlorophyll can prevent a buildup of calcium oxalate; this reduces the risk of kidney stones. Finally, chlorophyll contains agents that can reduce or eliminate certain body odors associated with urine and the colon.
