- 1). Hold the cat with two hands while you feel its fur to locate the mats. Less serious mats can be combed out, but large mats need to be cut away.
- 2). Begin combing the mat in the direction of hair growth. Start from the top of the mat and comb to free hairs from the mat. If the fur is especially matted, the comb will not come through the fur. Use scissors to slowly snip away the mat from just below the comb.
- 3). Remove matted hair clumps from the comb and comb away any remaining matting. Continue to snip away large mats when necessary.
