How to Safely Kill Ants in the Kitchen

If you have a problem with ants in your kitchen, you will want to kill them using the safest methods possible. No one wants to use pesticides in areas where food preparation goes on or the family gathers together for a meal. You want to kill the ants without any risk of food contamination in your kitchen.

Before you learn how to safely kill ants in the kitchen it will help you to understand how ants work. Ants will enter your home and eat sugars and protein. The worker ants actually carry the food back to the colony. They are not capable of eating it themselves. They can only ingest liquids.

At the colony they will feed the larvae. The larvae will then digest the food and create a by-product that the workers and queen will then eat.

In the kitchen, you want to kill ants in the most safe and natural way. The best way to accomplish this is to use baits. The worker bees will take the bait to the colony and feed it to the larvae. When the workers and queen eat the by-product, they too will be exposed to the bait. In this way you are attacking all stages of the ant life cycle with one product.

One good bait product is called Niban. Niban is boric acid based so it is very safe and natural. Boric acid has half the toxicity of table salt. Niban looks a little like corn meal. Put it down where the ants can find it and bring it back to the colony.

Another safe and natural bait is one that is home made. You can make this safe bait by mixing peanut butter and boric acid with a 100/1 ratio. Leave this out for the ants to take back to the colony.

If you want to speed up the process, you can use a spray dust from EcoSmart to get rid of the ants. Some of EcoSmart's products are so safe and natural, they are exempt from EPA regulation.

These ideas should help you get rid of ants safely and naturally in your kitchen. Whatever you do, do not use a repellant as it will only cause the ants to find a new trail and to build sub-colonies. The best way to get rid of ants safely is with bait.
